Once you’ve taught your kindergarteners what a sentence is (a group of words that tells us something – learn more in episode 10), it’s time to teach them proper conventions.
In our classroom, we used a 5-star Sentence Writing Checklist to promote independence and encourage students to self-check their work. This episode is all about how we taught each of the 5 steps and effectively using the 5-star sentence writing checklist in kindergarten.
What is the 5-star Sentence Checklist?
Our 5-Star Sentence Writing Checklist focuses on these 5 steps:
-
Capitalization
-
Spacing
-
Punctuation
-
Spelling
-
Does it make sense?
Take the time to teach each star and pair it with a kindergarten-friendly visual so that students really do understand what each star means.
Teaching Sentence Writing Step by Step
A common mistake kindergarten teachers make is trying to teach the conventions all at once. It can quickly become overwhelming when they have to remember all the things at once. Breaking it down step by step helps them to build independence.
Start with practicing proper capitalization.
Then move on to spacing so students understand that you put spaces between words so the writing makes sense.
After spacing, it’s time for punctuation. Start with periods and show them that we put periods at the end of a sentence (naming part and telling part) not sprinkle them in like confetti.
Next focus on phonetic spelling. Encourage your kindergarten students to use spelling patterns and sight words that you’ve taught them but remind them that we do not need to spell every single word correctly. Phonetic spelling is wonderful at this stage.
Finally, do the words make sense? The purpose of writing is to tell someone something so we need to make sure the sentence makes sense.
Give Kindergarten Students Opportunities to Self-Check Their Writing
This is where the 5-star Sentence Writing Checklist shines. Put the poster up in your classroom, add the visuals to your writing center, put it in writing center, and even at the top of their writing papers to give your kindergarten students opportunities to check their own work.
After your students write a sentence, they can use the visual checklist to go back and make sure they have a 5-star sentence.
It’s a simple system and it’s highly motivating. Kids love earning the stars!
Building Independent Writers in Kindergarten
When students understand what a sentence is and have a clear checklist for writing conventions, sentence writing becomes much more manageable.
Instead of guessing what to do next, students know exactly what they need to include in their writing.
This structure helps reduce frustration, increases independence, and builds confident writers in kindergarten.
