Episode 10: What Is a Sentence? Teaching How to Write a Sentence in Kindergarten

This episode might ruffle a few feathers, but here it is:

If your kindergarten students do not know what a sentence is, or they do not know their letter sounds yet, they should not be writing sentences independently.

So many teachers are frustrated because their students “cannot write sentences.” They forget capital letters. They leave out words. They write random strings of letters. Or they freeze and refuse to try.

But most of the time, the real problem is not effort or stamina.

It is that they do not truly understand what a sentence is.

In this episode of The Kindergarten Toolbox Podcast, we are breaking down how to explicitly teach kindergarten students what a sentence is before expecting them to write one.

Why Sentence Writing Falls Apart

When we tell students to “write a sentence,” we are asking them to:

  • Understand that letters represent sounds

  • Build words from those sounds

  • Put words together in the correct order

  • Create a complete thought

  • Add capitals and punctuation

That is a lot.

If students do not understand that a sentence is a group of words that tells us something, they are simply guessing.

Writing random words together does not make a sentence.

Students need to understand the purpose of writing before they can do it independently.

Teaching Kindergarteners What a Sentence Is

In kindergarten, we keep it simple:

A sentence is a group of words that tells us something.

We chant it. We repeat it. We post it. We practice it.

Then we dig a little deeper and teach that every sentence has:

  • A naming part

  • A telling part

The naming part tells who or what the sentence is about.
The telling part tells what is happening.

When students understand that both parts are required, they can begin to identify whether a group of words is a sentence or not.

For example:

“The red ball” is not a sentence.
“The red ball bounces” is a sentence.

This foundation prevents the overwhelm that happens when students are told to “just write a sentence” without understanding how one is built.

Start With the Basics Before Sentence Writing

Before expecting independent sentence writing, students should be able to:

  • Write words

  • Label pictures

  • Build simple lists

  • Identify naming and telling parts

When we break sentence writing into smaller, manageable steps, we prevent frustration and build confidence.

Teaching sentence structure first sets students up for long-term success instead of short-term compliance.
