Episode 29: What to Plan Before the First Week of Kindergarten (Hint- It’s Not Your Centers)

Have you spent your summer organizing centers, decorating your classroom, shopping on Amazon, and making copies, but you’re still not exactly sure what you’re teaching during the first week of kindergarten?

If so, you’re not alone. Every summer, I see kindergarten teachers pouring hours into classroom setup, center organization, bulletin boards, and all the fun back-to-school projects. And don’t get me wrong, I love a cute classroom just as much as the next teacher. I can absolutely lose an afternoon organizing bins or wandering through the Target Dollar Spot. But over the years, I realized something important. The things that made me feel productive weren’t always the things that actually prepared me for a successful school year.

In this episode of The Kindergarten Toolbox Podcast, I’m sharing why the first week of kindergarten deserves more of your attention than your classroom centers, what you should actually be planning before school starts, and how focusing on the right things will help you walk into your classroom feeling prepared and confident instead of overwhelmed. If you’re searching for first week of kindergarten ideas, kindergarten lesson plans, back-to-school kindergarten tips, or kindergarten classroom management strategies, this episode will help you focus on what matters most.

The Biggest Back-to-School Planning Mistake

One of the easiest traps to fall into during the summer is what I like to call productive procrastination. You’re working hard, you’re checking things off your to-do list, and your classroom is becoming more organized by the minute. But deep down, you’re avoiding the one question that feels the hardest: What am I actually going to teach during the first week of kindergarten?

I know because I’ve been there. I spent summers preparing literacy centers that I barely used during September. I laminated activities, printed games, and organized materials that never quite fit the way I thought they would once real kindergarten students walked into my classroom. Meanwhile, the lessons that truly mattered hadn’t been planned yet.

What Kindergarten Students Really Need During the First Week

The first week of kindergarten isn’t about jumping straight into academics. It’s about teaching students how to be successful in your classroom. Before children can learn letters, numbers, and beginning reading skills, they need to understand how your classroom works.

That means teaching students how to line up, how to sit on the carpet, how to use classroom supplies, how to transition between activities, how to ask for help, and what your classroom expectations are. They also need to learn your bathroom procedures, lunch and recess routines, dismissal procedures, and all of the little things we often forget they have never learned before.

These lessons are not taking time away from academics. They are laying the foundation that allows academics to happen. When students understand your routines and procedures, they feel safe, confident, and ready to learn. Those simple systems become the foundation for everything you’ll teach throughout the rest of the school year.

Why Your First Week Sets the Tone for the Entire Year

One of the biggest lessons I learned came after my own first year teaching kindergarten. If you’ve listened to previous episodes, you know I was unexpectedly moved into kindergarten just one week before school started. I learned a lot through trial and error that year, and many of those lessons shaped the way I teach today.

Over the next several years, I had the opportunity to mentor many brand-new kindergarten teachers. I found myself sharing the same advice over and over again because I knew something they hadn’t experienced yet. The first week of kindergarten matters more than almost any other week of the school year.

It’s easy to believe that classroom success comes from having the perfect centers or beautifully organized materials, but what really creates a successful kindergarten classroom is teaching consistent routines, clear expectations, and predictable procedures from the very beginning. Those are the lessons that continue paying off long after your bulletin boards have changed and your centers have been replaced.

Before You Buy One More Thing…

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your back-to-school checklist, I want you to pause before adding one more thing to your Amazon cart or printing one more center activity.

Instead, ask yourself these questions. Do I know what students will do the moment they walk into my classroom? Have I planned how I’m going to teach classroom expectations? Do I know how I’ll introduce school supplies? Have I thought through my bathroom procedures, transitions, dismissal routine, and family communication plan?

Those decisions will have a much bigger impact on your school year than another set of center activities. Your classroom doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated before students arrive, but having a clear plan for your first week will give both you and your students the confidence you need to start the year successfully.
